Hi.

Welcome to the blog.  Here you'll find stories and photos of our South American Journey

LIMA. A Quick Stop at a Seaside Metropolis. 37 001 Km

An obligatory stop on the road north, we found ourselves in Lima for a week.  The main reason we had planned to be here for a week was to allow sufficient time to get a visa for Brasil (which we weren't able to do before leaving Australia).   Given we would be there from Monday to Friday, we also added 2hrs of language school in each day.  As it turns out, with the upcoming Olympics, Brasil has waved it's visa requirements whilst we will be there.  Oh well.

We stay in an area between the popular tourist spots of Miraflores and Baranco.  The language school was a 20 minute walk into Miraflores, and the coast path, art, and music scene was in Baranco.

A walking tour through Baranco showed us some of the early history as well as touring through some of the smaller lane ways to see the street art of the area.

Apart from trying to organise the visa we didn't need and hanging out in Baranco, we went to one of the best museums I've ever visited.  Locally known as the Larco museum, it is named after the archeologist who first started to research the different cultures that existed in Peru prior to the Incas.  The development of his excavation techniques brought huge amounts of information in assessing the time periods of artifacts and his methods are still in common use today.

Apart from a well laid out museum, they are also one of the few museums that will allow you into the catalogue sections where they literally have artifacts stacked to the ceiling in cabinets.

And to top it off they have an erotic museum dedicated to the numerous clay artworks that were made for the dead and were often placed in their burial plots.

An unexpected highlight of Lima was the water park.  Not the sort that you go to during the day and slide down massive slides, but one with a lot of different fountains all lit up at night.

Projected display onto fountains.

So a quick trip through Lima.  It was enough for us.   We now continue on north and back into the mountains.
